LPMI passes resolution supporting Trans-Rights

WHEREAS, the State of Michigan has introduced House Joint Resolution E, proposing an amendment to the state Constitution requiring the collection of data on citizens to be marked with their assigned gender at birth and uses such definition to adjust the State’s view of individuals in terms of rights, benefits and protections – without regard to their transition;  

WHEREAS, between 1991 and 2017 Cornell University researched over 50 scholarly papers on the effects of transition and concluded gender transition is marked by clear improvement of mental health; improved quality of life, self esteem, relationship satisfaction; reduced anxiety and depression; and that while findings are evolving, research is historically limited by stigma;

WHEREAS, the World Professional Organization for Transgender Health published in it’s Standards of Care Version 8 that 98% of people who transition will continue to transition medically;

WHEREAS, the Libertarian Party of Michigan formally opposes interventions by the federal government in state, local, or personal affairs; opposes any form of discrimination by government based on any group or individual identification; and believes the most fundamental property right is the right to self-ownership;

RESOLVED, the Libertarian Party of Michigan recognizes the right of individuals who’ve reached the age of majority to determine if transition is medically necessary and opposes any government policy or action that seeks to discriminate against individuals based on their gender identity, infringe upon their right to self-ownership, or interfere with their personal medical decisions regarding gender;
