LPMI Passes Resolution in favor of Small Business

Resolution in Support of Small Business Entrepreneurs in Michigan
Whereas, small businesses are the backbone of Michigan’s economy, driving innovation, creating jobs, and fostering local community development; and
Whereas, small business owners in Michigan face significant challenges, including heavy regulations, burdensome taxation, and an environment that often favors large corporations through the influence of dark money and PACs that lobby and financially support politicians; and
Whereas, these excessive regulations and policies not only hinder the growth of small businesses but also undermine their ability to thrive in a free-market economy, stifling entrepreneurship and
innovation; and
Whereas, small business entrepreneurs are essential to the vitality and cultural identity of Michigan’s communities, contributing to local character, diversity, and social fabric; and
Whereas, the Libertarian Party of Michigan is committed to reducing government overreach and creating an environment where businesses of all sizes can compete fairly and thrive; and
Whereas, the actions of Lansing politicians and bureaucrats during the COVID-19 pandemic, including lockdowns and the designation of small businesses as “non-essential,” caused significant harm to small business owners and their employees, leading to widespread economic distress, loss of livelihoods, and permanent closures of many businesses that were once vital parts of Michigan’s communities; and
Whereas, these government-imposed restrictions were disproportionate and failed to account for the unique needs and circumstances of small businesses, while large corporations were often able to weather the storm through political influence and special treatment; and
Whereas, the Michigan Legislature’s recent proposals to expand licensing fees across multiple
industries during the 2024 lame-duck session threaten to further burden small businesses with additional costs and regulatory compliance, harming their ability to survive and grow in an already challenging environment; and
Whereas, these increases in licensing fees are part of a broader trend of expanding government control over industries, placing small businesses at a competitive disadvantage to larger corporations that have the resources to absorb such costs;
Therefore, be it resolved that the Libertarian Party of Michigan Executive Committee recognizes the importance of small businesses in Michigan’s economy and culture, and stands in solidarity with small business owners who are burdened by excessive regulations, taxation, and political favoritism towards large corporations; and
Be it further resolved that the Libertarian Party of Michigan condemns the actions of Lansing politicians and bureaucrats that disproportionately impacted small businesses during the COVID 19 pandemic, and advocates for policies that ensure the freedom of all businesses, regardless of size, to operate without arbitrary government interference; and
Be it further resolved that the Libertarian Party of Michigan will advocate for policies that reduce the regulatory burden on small businesses, eliminate unnecessary taxes, and support a free market where entrepreneurs can succeed without undue interference from government or corporate interests; and
Be it further resolved that the Libertarian Party of Michigan calls on the Michigan Legislature to reject any proposals to increase licensing fees that disproportionately harm small businesses, and instead focus on creating an environment where entrepreneurship can flourish, and competition is
fair, fostering a stronger and more sustainable economy for all Michiganders.
