***** For Immediate Release *****
November 4, 2016
When the dust settles on the Great Election of 2016, two questions come to mind. First, was anything really accomplished? And second, what will we tell our children?
As for the second, one of the things Gary Johnson has said over and over is “if you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.” Given the unprecedented mud-slinging, name-calling, and, yes, outright lies told by Secretary Clinton and Mr. Trump, if nothing else remains, the importance of telling the truth should re-emerge as an important American value.
What truth will you tell? Libertarians will go to sleep with a clear conscience on Tuesday night knowing that their candidate talked about issues without demonization and without the kind of language that would embarrass most parents.
And when it comes to the truth we tell our children about our role in the election, I’m proud to say that I’m supporting the values young people espouse. Millennials by a large margin are supporting the values of the Libertarian Party: A belief in free-market enterprise without crony capitalism – together with an inclusive social tolerance that makes the dream of America real for all.
Both major parties have abandoned some part of the American Dream. Democrats now rely on government-centered solutions to almost every complaint a citizen may have. Republicans want government to enforce a narrow moral code driven by a minority and have used government to pick their own winners and losers.
We can change the direction of history. November 8 presents an opportunity unknown in generations. Michigan law (MCL 168.532) provides that if Gary Johnson receives 154,040 votes in this election (about 4.2% of anticipated turnout), then the Libertarian Party will become a major party in Michigan in 2018.
Politicians, pundits, and parents all say that “the future” is the focus of their efforts. Well, young people have said they endorse Libertarian values – and expect a more issue-driven conversation. Voters have the opportunity right here, right now, to bring forth a serious 3rd Party choice for Michigan voters.
Voters tired of “Team Red” and “Team Blue” screaming at each other can truly think of their children, vote their conscience, ignore the voices of doom, and embrace the future by voting for a new force in Michigan politics. A force that believes in a future of freedom for our children.
That is a truth worth telling. And something real will be accomplished.
